TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Casey Cavanaugh (she/they) and I’m a military brat who identifies home as San Antonio, TX. I am a full-spectrum (birth/loss/postpartum) doula and placenta specialist. I truly love it all! This extends everywhere in my life - I love plants, hiking, painting, writing, animals, and some good food with bad tv. Time is my most precious commodity and I love spending it with family, my 4 cats, and some really amazing parents.

HOW DID YOU COME TO DOULA WORK?

I have always had a deep love and respect for pregnancy that initially seemed different to people. In my own loss, I discovered things I wish I had available and developed a way to approach these moments for others I loved in similar situations. While loss was my introduction to service, birth is such a beautiful, interconnected piece of these journeys and finally fulfilled my passion. And postpartum turned out to be the cherry on top - I love nurturing the humans who bring forth this love and life! I have always sought to serve others in the ways that I wish I knew I needed and love that I can continue to learn to be that person for others. I found out why I loved pregnancy, birth, parents, support, community - I belong in service to people around me and the people they are bringing earthside.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST OR FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT DOULA WORK?

This list will never end for me. I love learning new things about pregnancy, breastfeeding, parent care, but also the new things we find in people and infant mannerisms. I love providing care, knowledge, information, and support in a crucial time and believe it is one of the most essential things humans can give in transitional moments. Service is an intrinsic part of my life. My empathy and passion have allowed me to care for the some of the most amazing humans. People’s capabilities astound and motivate me constantly to do more for every person I have the privilege to work with. Nothing is better than a parent saying “I never knew birth could be this way for me”.

WHAT ARE YOUR SPECIALTIES OR AREAS OF PARTICULAR PASSION?

I have placed great emphasis in pursuing inclusive and informed education. I am particularly passionate about trauma informed care for all people, supporting BIPOC humans, and helping other LGBTQIA+ people. I continue to pursue education at all times and try to keep informing my care in new ways no matter how active I am. I have found particular interest in each area of transition I support. At present, my emphasis has been on caring for the birth parent as they make their way into parenthood and all the new ways I can support someone while focusing on the integration of empathy, knowledge, and culture.
