What is a Doula?

Pronounced: DOO-luh

It's a Greek word that means a female servant. Referring to a specific servant who supported the mother of a household through pregnancy, childbirth and the early childhood stages of parenting.
(doulos is the male form of this word, example: refers to Jesus washing His disciples' feet in the Christian Bible)

Today, the need for a dedicated support person for the mother of a household still exists. How do you know you're going to receive the kind of care you need, from a provider who will bring value to the experience? The training, expertise and certifications offered in modern times vary greatly. Because there is no legislation of licensure required, there are many women who call themselves doulas, but may not have any formal training or the integrity of completing a certification.

We at Tranquil Seasons are trained by, receive certification from and adhere to the MaternityWise International Board Certification values and Scope of Practice. The MWI program is a demanding and challenging, top-tier level of education for maternity care workers of all kinds. When you hire a Tranquil Seasons Doula, you can be assured our skill level is at the top of it's class and the knowledge we bring will empower you and give you peace of mind.

There are three main types of doulas:

Antepartum Doula - serves the mother during pregnancy, when complications such as bedrest cause a mom to require extra help before the baby arrives.

Labor/Birth Doula - serves the mother by educating her and spending time getting to know her during pregnancy, then supporting her physically, emotionally, and informationally during labor and childbirth.

Postpartum Doula - serves the mother after birth, by assisting her to get to know and understand her newborn as well as supporting her own recovery both physically and emotionally.

In addition, our doulas all have subsets of specialties. Some are experts in breastfeeding and hold certifications in Lactation Support and Education. We have doulas who are also licensed massage therapists on staff as well as cosmetologists (who provide our "Go Home Gorgeous" services). Some have had several children of their own, and degrees in nutrition, herbalism or early childhood education. Still others are phenomenal at reading babies' cues and supporting healthy sleep habits for the entire household.

Whatever your specific need during the "childbearing year", we've got a doula for that! :)

Give us a call today, to discuss what's on your mind and on your to-do list.
We will be happy to help you check a few things off before the big day!
